-
Make a plan
I mentioned before that thrifting can be overwhelming at first. It is best to make a plan for yourself to have a clear goal. You can create a list just like you would do with a grocery list. This will help anyone stay focused and stay on budget when shopping at the thrift store. For example, I create a wish list of clothing I am looking for each season.
-
Dress for the occasion
Depending on what thrift shop you stop at, not all stores have dressing rooms. Instead of buying things that you don’t know are a good fit, you would have to opt-in for try it on over your clothes. Most thrift shops don’t offer refunds or exchanges. To remedy this pain point you must dress for the occasion. I find wearing form fitting clothes to help me try on my finds while in the middle of the store is beneficial.
-
Shop ONLY with cash
Shopping with cash can eliminate overspending and help you stay on budget. Thrift stores can easily persuade anyone to over-buy when the price points are so low. In addition, you might feel compelled to buy things that you don’t necessarily need. Again, to avoid over-buying, make a plan, set a budget, and bring cash. Please note, not all thrift stores take debit or credit cards, so it is best to just bring cash.
-
Location is key
To find quality prices, shop based on the location if you can. In other words, follow the money. You can find nice pieces when you shop at thrift stores that are closer to affluent neighborhoods.
-
Bring your own bag
Bring your own bag! Some thrift stores may charge you for bags and/or baskets may not be available. To remedy this pain point, bring your own shopping bag.
-
Be picky
When visiting make sure you get exactly what you are looking for. Stay clear of settling for things that are similar are close enough. Most likely you will find what you are looking for when you keep checking back. This will help you avoid filling up your home with things you won't wear or use.
- Inspect everything
Lastly, bring your hand sanitizer and get dirty. Make sure you inspect your items for stains or holes. Please note that most thrift stores are final sale. Before you buy anything, inspect your piece thoroughly.
Overall, thrifting is growing more and more popular each day. Thrifting can be a great experience when using these tips while shopping.
